Transforming your Voice

Many people have made a New Year’s resolution to transform some part of themselves in order to attract more friends, a promotion, a better relationship, or increased income.

You have decided the best way to do this is to BE a confident speaker and communicator and open the doors to more success in 2009.

Nature has given you a priceless gift in your voice. Your Best Voice can bring out Your Best Self. You voice is the means by which you communicate with others; the medium of your message and it is what makes understanding and camaraderie possible. How?

First you need to create a vision of who want to be in your professional and personal life. Imagine how you would like to sound to your friends, colleagues and loved ones and how they are reacting to your voice when you give presentations, speak in a business meeting, talk on the phone, go out to dinner, etc.

Imagine people paying rapt attention to what you’re saying and being motivated, and inspired by your remarks. Imagine your children doing what you ask because your voice tone is friendly, assertive and empathic. Imagine yourself being promoted, even in this economy, because you are now engaging people and being more persuasive.

One technique to build your new voice vision is to tape your current voice pattern while reading out loud or while talking on the telephone. Listen as objectively as you can…you may want to ask a friend for his/her input.
 
1.    Are you monotonous or melodious? Does your voice convey life, color and melody or do your sentences come out flat, and wooden without variety?
2.    Does you voice exude positive energy: full, clear, mellow and enthusiastic?
3.    Do you swallow, suppress or mumble your words so that people tire of listening?
4.    Do you talk so fast that listeners get frustrated and tend to “tune out”?
5.    Does your voice create interest and excitement and emotional involvement in the listener?
6.    Do you speak to softly, almost in a whisper, so that people keep asking you to repeat?
7.    Do you speak with a loudness and intensity that pushes people away?

If you find any of the above in your speaking voice, don’t worry. Changing your voice pattern is easily done and only requires more awareness, understanding and practice.  

When I speak with a new client, the first thing I ask is “How would you like to sound?” They are excited to tell me and then there is a pause and I hear, “But I’m 30, 40, 50, 60, years old and have been speaking this way for a long time. How easy can it be to change?”

The first thing I say is CANCEL,CANCEL,CANCEL. You have created and stated your vision and you have just canceled that vision with self-doubt. It is important get into the habit of knowing you can speak any way you wish. Cancel all self-limiting thoughts. You are in control of your thoughts, your emotions and your voice.
